The SLM workshop was designed for doctoral candidates from North German universities who are doing research in the fields of German linguistics, modern German literature, old German literature and media studies. The event aimed at offering a forum for communication and networking between the different disciplines.

The workshop, which took place in March 2014, was conceived as kick-off event and is going to take place every two years at one of the participating universities in North Germany (Bremen, Flensburg, Greifswald, Hamburg, Kiel, Lüneburg, Rostock).

The participants presented and discussed their projects about the following main topics:

  • Mediality in paratexts
  • Elements of the narrative
  • Text types and discourse
  • Colonialism and post-colonialism in media and literature
  • Medium and history
  • Narratology and staging

The presentation of academic posters, a mode of presentation being slowly introduced to the cultural sciences, supplemented the classic lecture. The posters were being exhibited throughout the duration of the workshop and were being presented in short five minute lectures. At the end of the workshop the best poster was awarded a prize.
