Grants for research stays and conference visits

If you would like to submit an application you must read the instructions carefully! When processing your application we will presume that you have done this.

The Graduate Center supports the academic networking of Kiel University's doctoral candidates who are registered with the Graduate Center by subsidizing travel expenses for conference visits and research stays. The Executive Committee of the Graduate Center evaluates the applications.

The Graduate Center's funding is particularly intended for doctoral candidates who do not have the possibility of receiving 100% funding elsewhere. For this reason, the Graduate Center expects you to apply first to every other possible source of funding relevant to your field. You have to document this in your application. You can use the information on the website of the Graduate Center and our consulting offers for this purpose. You can submit documentation of your efforts to obtain further funding after you have submitted your application.

The Graduate Center cannot grant more than € 500 per application. Please note that this grant will only be allocated if you can document that you have also submitted an application to the programmes Kongressreisen and Kurzstipendien für Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and that your applications were unsuccessful. These two funding programmes are open to all persons doing a doctorate at a German university, irrespective of his or her nationality. The information on the two above-mentioned programmes is only available in German; if you have any questions concerning your application please contact the DAAD directly or discuss your application with your supervisor.

Grant applications have to be submitted to the Graduate Center at least three months before the conference starts or the research stay at another research institution begins. We only grant funding for the active participation at conferences. You may send us confirmation of your registration at the conference and of your active participation after you have submitted your application.

Doctoral candidates from abroad have the possibility of applying for a short-term grant for research stays at a research institution outside Germany from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). We expect you to apply for one of these grants first before you submit your application to the Graduate Center. If you require assistance with your DAAD application please contact the Graduate Center. Please consult the rules of approval for grants from the DAAD. Information and forms to apply for grants from this organization are provided here.

If you are an employee of Kiel University or another research institution and you have received one of our grants you must apply for the approval of a business trip before you start your journey. Please apply first at your institution and then pass on the application to the Graduate Center. The grant will not be paid if the trip has not been authorized in advance! If another institution of Kiel University also supports your trip financially this institution must record the details concerning the payment of its grant in the application for the approval of a business trip. After your return you have to apply for the settlement of a business trip. Please pass on this application, together with all the documents and bills, to the Graduate Center so we can pay out your grant. Persons who are not employed by Kiel University or another research institution do not need to apply for the approval of a business trip. In this case the financial settlement takes place after the conference visit is over or the research stay has been concluded; please use the form called Reisekostenerstattung an Externe/Gäste.

Applications for the approval of a business trip have to be submitted via the university's online system Win Trip Advanced. Employees of the university can register using their personnel number.

On the webpages of the Travel Management you will find comprehensive information about all aspects of a business trip.
