Detailed information on the different types of doctoral studies in Germany can be found on the English website of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) Research in Germany - Info for PhD students.

Finding a PhD position is a portal especially for applicants from abroad searching for doctoral positions in Germany provided by the German Academic Exchange Service. Doctoral projects which applicants need to finance themselves can also be found on this portal. You can apply for a position directly online via the portal. 

You are from abroad and would like to apply for a doctorate at Kiel University?

The procedures mentioned above generally apply at Kiel University. The first persons to contact are professors at Kiel University who could potentially supervise your doctoral project. You should enquire about the possibility of doing your doctorate at the institutes which are working on projects in your field of interest. You may also contribute your own project ideas. To find out if the professor of your preference can supervise you please read the  doctoral degree regulations of the faculty of your choice.

To find out if you meet the requirements for doing a doctorate at Kiel University your examinations must be verified at the faculty responsible for you. The dean's offices, contact persons at the faculties and doctoral regulations are listed here.

In order to begin doctoral studies at the university you must have a master's degree or an equivalent degree from an accredited university. The degree must be valid at Kiel University and demonstrate that you are qualified for doctoral studies.
