You would like to know how to pursue a doctorate in Germany and how to apply for doctoral studies?

Detailed information on the different types of doctoral studies in Germany can be found on the website of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) Research in Germany - Info for PhD students.

Finding a PhD position is a portal especially for applicants from abroad searching for doctoral positions in Germany provided by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Doctoral projects where applicants need to finance themselves can also be found on this portal. You can apply for a position online via the portal. 

You are from abroad and would like to apply for a doctorate at Kiel University?

The procedures mentioned above generally apply at Kiel University. The first persons to contact are professors at Kiel University who could potentially supervise your doctoral project. You should enquire about the possibility of doing your doctorate at the institutes which are working on projects in your field of interest. You may also contribute your own project ideas. To find out if the professor of your preference can supervise you please read the  doctoral degree regulations of the faculty of your choice.

To find out if you meet the requirements for doing a doctorate at Kiel University your academic degree must be verified at the faculty responsible for you. The dean's offices, contact persons at the faculties and doctoral regulations are listed here.

In order to begin doctoral studies at the university you must have a master's degree or an equivalent degree from an accredited university. The degree must be valid at Kiel University and demonstrate that you are qualified for doctoral studies. Qualification opportunities and activities for doctoral candidates from abroad at Kiel University

In close cooperation with the International Center and the Academic Further Training, the Graduate Center is happy to provide specific events for doctoral candidates from abroad. For doctoral candidates who have registered with the Graduate Center all courses are free of charge.

International Center of Kiel University

The International Center of the CAU coordinates most of the international partnerships and co-operations. It is also in charge of the admission of international students, and it offers advice to foreign students and scientists throughout their stay in Kiel. It provides information about financial aid and international exchange programs for German students, graduates and scientists. It also offers courses and seminars designed specifically to address the needs of graduate students from abroad.

The Doc-Pilots offer you individual personal support in organizing your affairs at the beginning and during you doctoral studies.

The "Docs Get-Together" is aimed at doctoral candidates from abroad and offers the opportunity to get to know other people, who are in a similar phase of their doctorate, to spend a nice evening with them, to have fun and find some new friends.

Doctoral candidates can profit from personal support at the start and during their doctorate at Kiel University. There are a lot of things that need to be organized and handled, and the support of a local person makes this much easier.
