On-site training course for Metabolomics and mass spectrometry

Oct 15, 2019 12:00 AM to Feb 18, 2020 12:00 AM

Institut of Human Nutrition and Food Science

Target group

This workshop is intended for doctoral candidates and postdocs (up to two years after their doctorate) from the life sciences, food science, chemistry, biology, bio-chemistry and medicine.

Dr. Tobias Demetrowitsch, postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Human Nutrition and Food Science, Dept. Food Technology

his module addresses doctoral candidates who wish to work with or conduct parts of their research at the Kiel Metabolomics Platform. The training is offered "on-site" at the required analytical systems.

The aim of this module is to provide extensive knowledge and pratical skills in the field of instrumental analysis using different mass spectrometers. The systems provided by the Metabolomics Platform include a triple quad, a time-of-flight and a FT-ICR mass spectrometer. The favourable measuring methods will be adapted to the respective research questions and samples (as advised by the lecturer).

In addition to the analytical work, knowledge in the evaluation is conveyed with device-specific software packages. The focus here lies on a "semi-targeted" approach (comparing results with a database of expected or known substances) on the one hand. Data sets will be evaluated primarily by means of the principal component analysis (PCA), other methods, e.g. PLS may be applied.

Data analysis will be supervised by a staff member but primarily be conducted by the doctoral candidates themselves. The module is offered on demand to ensure optimal utilization of the equipment and the teaching language is either English or German. If required, the doctoral candidates are entitled to bring associated Bachelor's and Master's students with them.
