Joint offer of the Graduate Center and the International Center

Target Group:

Joint offer of the Graduate Center and International Center for Doctoral candidates and postdocs (up to two years after their doctorate) whose first language is Arabic

Carol Sheehan, Intercultural Communication and English Trainer

From 23 January - 27 February: each Tuesday from 04.15 pm  to 05.45 pm

This is a six-week course and is intended for doctoral candidates whose first language is Arabic. We will focus here on improving your communication skills both in speaking and writing. Additionally, we will also work on delicate situations that non-native speakers tend to have difficulties with, such as interrupting a speaker,  using a range of strategies spanning agreeing to not agreeing with a conversation partner. Participants are welcome to suggest areas that they would personally like to work on to improve their English skills. We can also cover specific areas that you need to work on for your academic work.

The course aims:

  • to improve your general confidence, fluency and accuracy in English
  • to improve your grammatical accuracy
  • to make you aware of mother language influences when communicating in English
  • to help you deal with difficult people and situations that are due to intercultural differences

The course is flexible and will be adjusted to meet the group' specific needs.

Applications are welcome until 18 January 2018 via our registration portal.
