New, time limited and complex – such are the tasks generally undertaken as projects. A work environment without project and team work is almost unimaginable nowadays. And this is not only true for the non-academic sector. 
Proven project management and leadership tools pave the way for the professional development and planning of projects, for competent guiding of their implementation and for their successful completion. With their help even difficult steps in the project journey can be safely navigated and team dynamics can be optimized. ‘Lateral guidance’ and ‘bottom-up’ leadership techniques contribute to the success of cooperation with colleagues, bosses and supervisors. 
During the workshop the participants familiarise themselves with a number of select project management, team work & leadership methods.

The following topics are at the core of the workshop:

Part 1: “Project management in academia: Taking off as a project pilot” 

  • Basics of project management: From design to completion of a project 
  • It is all about direction: Setting objectives for my projects 
  • How to handle the unforeseen: Strategies for dealing with difficulties 
  • Projects in the higher education sector: What are the idiosyncrasies of academia? 
  • Stakeholder analysis: Where do I find support for my project? 
  • Project management: My next steps 


Part 2: “Team work & leadership competencies in academia: Youngster – team player – key player” 

  • Basics of team work & leadership: An overview of leadership tasks and styles 
  • My leadership profile: Stocktaking of my key skills 
  • Ambiguous hierarchies: What does leadership mean in academia? 
  • Manager-employee discussions as a leadership tool: Setting common objectives 
  • Role change: Staff member – colleague – boss 
  • Team work & leadership competencies: My next steps

There are 16 places on this course. The persons that can participate in the course will receive an e-mail from the Graduate Center. Without this confirmation mail you cannot participate in the course. Only participants that have registered for the course via the Graduate Center will receive a certificate of attendance.

*: Professor Dr. ès sc. habil. Alexander Schiller, Jena, is a “Juniorprofessor” for inorganic chemistry at the Friedrich-Schiller-Universität Jena. His research interest is biomimetic signal transduction with inorganic models. Currently he holds a Heisenberg fellowship of the German Science Foundation [DFG]. He broadened his portfolio in 2012 with the project “Schiller & Mertens” and teaches advanced research skills: communication in science, team and leadership competences and methodology of higher education didactics. As an active researcher and group leader he knows the challenges of early-career scientists exactly.
